Anyone know which bit they are doing? Diversion stated above is bonkers. No one will do that. Last weekend there was mayhem in Hawthorn Lane and Pownall Park generally.

Oncemore the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing. Last weekend I was caught up in a complete traffic shambles starting on the A34 at Cheadle down to one lane due to roadworks. More jams after I diverted with roadworks past the Alexandra hospital at Cheadle. Further jams coming off the Mway on my return from Stockport to find the slip road at Gatley onto the A34 blocked. I then carried onto the M56 and took the slip road in order to come through the Manchester Airports runway tunnels road to Wilmslow. Then as a result I next
found Altrincham Road shut just past the new roundabout. It was only because I know the area I was able to divert through Morley Green. There were no diversion signs except turn back, no through road! After Morley I came back onto the main drag only to find the road closed again just past the Boddington Arms. It was enough to make a saint swear. My normal journeys usually take 20 minutes each way. This time it took 1 hour & 1 hour 10 minutes. What traffic management "whizkid" had the brilliant idea to divert traffic onto the A34 that was already having its own roadworks courtesy of Stockport Corporation? So heres the punch line. Altrincham Road will be closed again, with traffic diversions onto the A34 that is having the pressure pads on its charming radar speed traps renewed, thus causing traffic chaos on that road from Sept 7th to 9th. Take my advice:- STAY AT HOME, its better for your blood pressure. The people in charge could not run a party in a brewery.

If this mayhem is due to Cheshire East's planning, why am I not surprised??!!!!! Yes Clive they definitely could NOT run a party in a brewery! I have written confirmation from said Council that last Saturday (30th), the road would be closed from 6pm, NOT during the day! Because we trusted them to get it right (silly me), our Fun Dog Show at Morley Green went ahead. Obviously we had to go ahead as it was too late to cancel it as we didn't know they had closed the road until we tried to get there ourselves! Well Cheshire East, we will be claiming loss of earnings as the charity we were raising funds for, lost out!.... and they say local businesses will be open as usual?.... but how can they do business when no-one can get there? The lady who runs the Morley Tearooms was not allowed through the barrier at the roundabout, by the contractor, to get to work, even though she could see her tearoom, 100yds away from the roundabout. "Jobs worth" comes to mind! Cheshire East, you're really going to struggle to get back the respect and confidence of people in Wilmslow......

Why cant all this work be done at night, god knows we pay enougth in taxes as road users. when will anybody be held accountable for these stupid decsions or even give answers? I que up all week to go and come back to work, now my weekend is going to be spent qing for the joy of getting my car in and out of my drive way......

As well as the issues on the A34, there were also temporary traffic lights on Styal Road.

@AlanCharlesworth: the first week they did from Morley Green Rd to the Boddington Arms - and last weekend they did Boddington Arms to the puffin crossing near Buckingham Road. I'm guessing then that they'll be doing from Buckingham Road to the Hall Road/Hawthorn Street junction (near the Fire Station / Shell garage). That doesn't necessarily mean that only those bits will be closed to traffic though. I expect that Hawthorn Lane / Broad Walk on one side, and Chapel Lane / Oak Lane / Racecourse Road on the other will be a car park if you can get through using these routes.

They did the first weekend starting Saturday then Sunday day, but the residents complained about the noise on the Saturday night. Thats why it was done Saturday day. If you have money and complain to the council they change their minds. It just caused chaos. Cheshire East are useless.

CEC have just said that Altrincham Road will be closed this Saturday between 6pm and llpm - not during the day.
On Sunday they are still saying it will be closed between 8am and 5pm on Sunday.
Who can tell what will actually happen and who has the correct information?!

Sandra that is unbelievable. Did they send you an email?

When these works were initially announced the information I received was confusing and contradictory. The notices sent said the road would be shut from 8am to 5pm on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Then later the same day a press release was sent which said "Part of the A538 Altrincham Road, Wilmslow, will be completely closed off for the next three weekends" but then went on to say Bank Holiday weekend will not be affected - which was one of the next three weekends.

The press release went on to say "The closures are from 6pm to 11pm, not during the day. This will enable any shoppers and football traffic to access freely through Altrincham Road. Sunday closures will be from 8am to 5pm.

"The 1.5km stretch from Hall Road to 50m past Mobberley Road will be closed for essential resurfacing works from 08.00 until 17.00 hours each day, but the road will be fully open outside of these times."

I telephoned and asked for clarity, so a revised press release was sent which said "The 1.5km stretch from Hall Road to 50m past Mobberley Road will be closed for essential resurfacing works from 6pm to 11pm on Saturdays and 8am to 5pm on Sundays, but the road will be fully open outside of these times."

I updated the article and was therefore surprised when people started contacting me last Saturday (30th) morning to say the road was closed. I sent an email asking why but received no response so I called the Highways Department on Monday. They said it would be shut 8am to 5pm on both days this coming weekend. I asked her to double-check and she came back and said it was definitely going to be shut 8am to 5pm on this coming Saturday and Sunday.

I will make another call in the morning.

Lisa - We phoned the Council late this afternoon to confirm the times of work over the weekend as I remember there was confusion a couple of weeks ago. Anyway got through to Highways who assured us they were right but of course gave contradictory information yet again. Without your help on this site, we would not have known anything about the closures so thank you very much. I feel we are yet again victims of CEC who have little or no care for the electorate and our only hope is the ballot box next year.

Residents complained about the noise when the works were being done between 6pm to 11pm! So what would have they had to say if the works were done through the night as some of the previous comments on this issue have suggested.

I have not heard back from Cheshire East today but according to Twitter post from their Highways Department"

"Altrincham Rd, Wilmslow will be closeed to all traffic on Saturday and Sunday between 8am and 5pm for resurfacing works. Diversion in place."

"Altrincham Rd, Wilmslow closure is to include Mobberley Road as the junction is being resurfaced. There will be no access from Altrincham Rd”

"Altrincham Rd closure is between Mobberley Road and Hawthorne Street. Business's are open as usual, there will be no parking on the highway."

I came off the M56 on Sunday up the Wilmslow Road until the closure and the diversion signs were a complete shambles. They were worse than useless and whoever "organised" them is clearly defrauding the council.

From the closure, they directed you back to the motorway. Once back at the motorway, they directed you to turn back and head towards the closure. Repeat until you run out of fuel.

Cars were also making wrong turns off onto building sites because the diversion signs at the motorway merged into another diversion sign system too.

It was an absolute farce.

Why is it that so often when I experience the work of Cheshire East, I am left with a fear of how poorly they must be running the rest of it.

We were visiting relatives this weekend and stayed at the Premier Inn Boddington Arms so got tangled up several times in the roadworks. We must have gone up and down every street looking for a way through - lots of road closed signs, very frustrated drivers and even a couple of young lads in hi viz jackets trying to prevent cars going down dead ends. Later the same day we stupidly turned the wrong direction, ended up at the Waters building roundabout and were stopped from going back. Not knowing the area we followed other cars-more roads closed then put our faith in the diversion signs!! 90 mins and 30miles later having been to Wythenshaw and Altrincham we arrived at our relatives which should have been 5 mins drive from the hotel! Not impressed with the signs at all we went around the Waters roundabout at least 3 times!

@Mark,

Still it's only taken 5 weeks and they have nearly laid half a cycle path, at this rate they'll need to cover the hedging or the birds will be nesting again before they've finished.

I also fell foul of the Altrincham Rd closure on Sun, after a weekend away, and forgetting the M56 airport spur to access Wilmslow via Styal.
For Wilmslow bound traffic, the only indication of road closure ahead was after the Beehive, just before the Waters roundabout, which looped motorists back towards the airport tunnel. For this traffic there was a single diversion sign at the Beehive junction, sending vehicles into Morley village.
I was disappointed to find Morley Green Rd was also closed and the detour sent me to Mobberley to access Wilmslow via Knutsford Rd.
I can imagine a non-resident would be totally confused.
Poor works planning and diversion signage by CEC.
Altrincham Rd closed ahead and diversion signs could have been placed at the Beehive junction as there would have been no opposing traffic, other than Waters site traffic.

The planning/communication sounds like a shambles - but it is good to see some money actually being spent to improve the state of the roads in Wilmslow.
