Carnival spirit coming to Wilmslow town centre

The vibrant Batala Drumming Band will provide a very visual, loud and entertaining display as they make their way through Wilmslow town centre on Saturday, 5th July.

They will be joined on the parade by Rotary Robin and Rosie, two 12ft scarecrows, made by rotarians Geoff Shelmerdine and Bernard Davies.

The drumming parade will be marching along Alderley Road, Grove Street and Water Lane, departing at 11am and 2pm.

Over 100 straw creations can be found hanging out on the streets, on display in shop windows, lurking in hidden corners and positioned high on the rooftops - where they will remain until Saturday 12th July.

New for this year, the Rotary scarecrow 'Recycled Ruth' is launching her own Selfie Photo Competition.

Unfortunately she had to be repaired, after suffering some damage last week, but 'Recycled Ruth' will be back tomorrow, Wednesday 2nd July, when she will be hanging out in the town centre waiting for people to capture a prize winning 'Selfie' with her.

She will then return on Saturday for the Scarecrow Parade (Recycle Ruth can be seen in the second photo above).

Email your selfie (high resolution please) to [email protected] for our gallery and the one judged to be the best will receive prize draw tickets and the chance to win a selection of great prizes, including a two day break in a luxury holiday home in Yorkshire.

Forms and maps for the Scarecrow Treasure Hunt will be available from Saturday at Wheeldon Opticians on Hawthorn Lane, Candy & Cards on Water Lane and the Rotary stand on Bank Square.

Sadly I can't make it to this year's parade. The drummers are good, but it would be better if there was more variety in the performances, those who have seen the drummers several times may stop coming.

I have seen the Batala Drumming Band in previous years and have to say I can't wait to see them again.
